Let’s Stop Perpetuating The Calories In/Calories Out Myth

If only it were this simple

I am SO SICK of seeing simplistic graphics like this all over social media. Graphics that adhere to the notion that we are entirely in control of how our calories are being distributed, utilized, and burned. Guess what! We aren’t! We don’t get a say in all of that. That’s hormones job. Multiple hormones. They are in the driver’s seat.

Obesity is a hormonal imbalance, not a caloric one. Weight gain can be caused by sooooo many different things. Hormones, lack of quality sleep, stress, overtraining, and eating too much of the wrong foods (sugar, processed carbs) can all contribute to weight gain. And I would say that all those things drive how optimally or sub-optimally our hormones work. I will keep repeating myself until it becomes common knowledge: WHAT you eat is so much more important than HOW much.

Stop killing yourself at the gym and watching your Fitbit or Apple Watch incessantly just to see how many calories you’ve burned. Stop plugging everything into MyFitnessPal and tracking every bite of food that goes into your mouth. Maybe the stress of all that is what’s making you fat!

Start eating REAL, WHOLE foods. That’s it. Just try it. What you’re doing hasn’t worked for years so you might as well try something new right? You’ve got nothing to lose! Give your body the foods it needs in order to build stable cells walls, build muscle, use fat for energy, break down into ATP, and feed your mitochondria.

It’s amazing what can happen when you stop trying to control every aspect of this calories in/calories out model (because you can’t) and just listen to what your body needs.
